the Farmer's Market

Today was the first day of the Saturday Farmer's Market in Fishers. Tom and I met Andy, Kelly, Amelia, and Asher at the Original Pancake House for breakfast and then went to the market. Lot's of food and flowers. We got kettle corn and jars of salsa.  Love it!

Tuesday's Trip to Chicago

On Tuesday Tom and I drove to Chicago.  We met Matt at 

Uncommon Ground at 9am.  It was so good to see him, even if he was tired (he had been up until 4am talking with his new roommates, Josh and Megan.) After breakfast, we went to see his apartment. It was recently remodeled and was really nice.  Now they just have to find the time to get totally moved in and get rid of the boxes! 

We then drove to McHenry for my some-what-annual check up with Dr. Kohn. I haven't been feeling that great, so he decided to make some changes in my medications. Sure hope that helps.

Long day of driving.... maybe next time we should plan to spend the night!

I had spent from January through March losing 25 pounds and the last two weeks gaining 8 of those pounds back.  How come it is so easy to gain weight and so darn hard to lose? 

I have lost my dieting mojo... I need to find it.

It's been over a month since I have blogged.... and wouldn't you know the format has changed. I signed on and it looks completely different.  Have I told you how much I hate change! I hate change! I don't like new things. Oh, Okay there are some new things that I like: new clothes, fresh chocolate chip cookies, flowers blooming, a manicure. But why do other things have to change?

My father had a stroke this week.

I know that my losing weight is a goal that God desires for me, but it can not become my main focus. I can not let it rule my day or how I am feeling. How about you? Asher's Baby Dedication

Andy and Kelly had Asher's Baby Dedication at their church, Geist Christian Church, on Saturday evening. Such a sweet ceremony. Pastor Randy asked for a pledge from the parents, family, and then church family. Then the congregation sings "Jesus Loves the Little Children" and "Jesus Loves Me" as Pastor Randy walks around the room holding Asher and introducing him to the church family.

I went to the dentist today thinking that I would finally be getting my implant front tooth, but no. The dentist took impressions so that a custom post could be made. That may take up to a couple of weeks. Then my dentist will make a tooth that goes on the post. That could take a day or two. So for now, I am stuck with my little fake tooth on a flipper or going without a tooth as pictured here:

Oh, how often I've thought if I just knew what was going to happen, I could deal with it. I have always hated being in 'limbo' and not knowing or waiting to see what was going to happen next. I've not ever thought about the future being one of God's secrets. A secret that He chooses and controls. A secret that He reveals at just the right moment. I am to trust Him and focus on the truths that He has already revealed to me: His unending love, His purpose for my life, His sovereignty... and so much more.

Since I began my new diet, Leanness Lifestyle, a few weeks ago, my life seems to be crazy. I have to spend several hours reading, logging what I eat, and exercising. These are all good things, but they seem to be putting a lot of pressure on me. I know that the first couple of months will be the busiest and then it should become easier. With my depression I really need to keep my life very simple and keep God as my top priority. Please pray for me that I can find a good balance in my life. How about you? Are you too busy? Yesterday was a hard day for me. Amelia, Asher, and I were cranky. I think we were all just tired. So good to know that God is there to give me rest and refreshment today. I know I am exactly where God wants me to be... here in Indianapolis, being able to spend time with the grandchildren. What a blessing!

As I mentioned in this mornings blog, I am starting a new diet/lifestyle. It is called the Leanness Lifestyle. I have read on Jayme's blog about her weight loss journey over the last year. She didn't go into great details, but it sounded like it was comprehensive, including not only a healthy diet, but exercise. Not only that, but she was succeeding in losing weight. Go Jayme!

Once a year the Leanness Lifestyle University offers an online boot camp for 100 people. Jayme had participated last year and was encouraging others to sign up for this years. I have thought about it for the last several months, but just couldn't decide if it would be too hardcore for me. And to tell you the truth, I didn't investigate that much into it. So Monday rolls around and its the day to sign up. I again was waffling and then just decided to do it. So I did.

I was accepted into the boot camp and spent Tuesday trying to get familiar with the website. Pretty much getting more worried and regretting my spur of the moment decision!

Wednesday I realized that this truly was a leanness diet... meaning low fat and that the low carbohydrate/high protein (read high fat) diet that I had been on wasn't going to mesh. So I made the decision to try and get on board with the leanness diet. Several issues I will have to overcome, but mainly I am going to have to learn to like vegetables. Up to this point in my life, I have had a hate relationship with vegetables! For now I am simply telling myself that I don't have to like them, I just have to eat them. But I am sure hoping that over time my taste buds will awaken to their goodness... I don't want to be gagging down my broccoli the rest of my life.

Thursday and Friday went fairly smoothly. It is hard to get in the habit of logging everything I eat and I am having some difficulty with their logging program, but figure I'll get the hang of it soon.

Today. On my to do list today was a reminder that we needed to have a scale that measures in the tenth of a pound. Now I have a nice scale, but it only measures to the half pound. I start to decide it is good enough and then remind myself that I am trying to do this program to the best of my ability. So I run to Walmart and buy a new scale. Now I hit a major snag. I weigh about 5 more pounds on it than I do my old scale. Now it feels like I have to lose those same 5 pounds over again! Arrgg! Plus it means I have been 5 pounds heavier than I thought, Yikes!!

Two thoughts this morning. First we are not to wear ourselves out with analyzing and planning. I don't think it is saying not to analyze and plan, but not to wear ourselves out. Right now I am starting a new diet/lifestyle plan (more on this on another post) and at the beginning of any new venture there needs to be analyzing and planning. I just need to be careful, giving the appropriate amount of time and energy to change some habits, but not let it take precedent over my devotion to God and my family.

Second thought: don't you just love being called one of God"s people?!!

I just finished eating at Don Pablo's. We went there for an early celebration of Tom's birthday tomorrow. We met Andy, Kelly, Amelia, and Asher. The food was yummy, especially the dessert!

Andy decided that since we were almost to the end of January, we should discuss how we are doing on our word for the year. Tom's word was devotion, Kelly's word was focus, Andy's word was opposites: work-rest, starting projects-finishing projects, etc.. (Matt's word is love, but he couldn't be with us for lunch), and my word was "healthy choices".

I like the idea of having a word for the year. Something that encapsulates what we would like to work on for the year. It feels less restrictive and easier to handle than resolutions. But the things that make it better for me than resolutions, are also the down fall of choosing a word. It seems much harder to quantify how you are doing. After all there aren't any concrete actions that you can check and say that you have done them.

I guess that is why that I have to have both, a word to encourage me and help me focus on my goal, and specific steps that I need to do to help me reach that goal. What are the difference from resolutions and my specific steps? To me a resolution is: I want to lose weight. Where my specific steps would be to eat low carbohydrate/high protein, to drink 8 glasses of water a day, to exercise 5 times a week.

Maybe this is all semantics, but so far this year focusing on making healthier choices and having my specific steps seems to be working for me. I have lost 10 pounds in January. I have gone back to church and joined a Bible study. I am keeping in better touch with Andy and Matt. Tom and I are communicating better.

It's usually easy to look back and see how God had been at work in your life when you were going through a difficult time. It is not so easy to see His hand when you are in the midst of the difficult time. That is when we need faith. Knowing what God's word says (that He is with us and for us and working all things for good) and staying close to Jesus will help us overcome any adversity.

Last night I had a bad dream about finances. Even after I was awake, I couldn't shake the feelings of fear. We are not in dire straits by any means, but we are like a lot of people and have debt... more debt than I am comfortable with. God has so blessed us and sometimes I feel like we haven't been good enough stewards of that blessing. So add to those feelings of fear, dis-appointment in myself. My day was not starting off on the best note. I decide that I may as well get up, I didn't think that I could fall back to sleep. I open my devotional and what are the first words I read--"It's alright to be human." Thank You God. It's alright to be human and make mistakes, it's alright to be disappointed in myself sometimes, it's alright because God can and does redeem my mistakes, He loves me, His strength is shown in my weakness. This does not mean that I can go on getting myself into more debt, God wants me to be a good steward of what He has given me. But it does mean that He forgives me for past mistakes and will help me to make better decisions in the future. He will care for me and provide for me. I need to trust in Him.

Don't you love how God is always loving on us and always teaching us. Yesterday Tom arrived in Chicago after a long long flight to discover that his drive home was going to be snowy and icy. What normally takes him around 4 hours took him three times longer. I would have preferred for him to stay in Chicago, but he was anxious to get home and assured me that he would drive safely. That is when I had to turn to God and put Tom and me into His loving arms. God assured me as He always does, that He is sovereign and He was watching over us. Then this morning my devotion is about depending on Him. Yes, God I do!

Tom had to get a physical this morning in Chicago and was also on short call. He had made plans with Matt to have lunch together. I decided I would take a chance and hope that Tom didn't get called on a trip... which would have left me in Chicago with his car and needing to drive home by myself. So, I threw somethings into a bag (forgetting several important items) and we hit the road. We spent the night at the O'Hare Hilton. It was pretty nice, but I couldn't smile at the valet or check in person: my temporary front tooth is getting very flimsy and I only put it in when I am in public... unfortunately, it was packed away in my bag. I hadn't really thought about having to check in. Oh well, people in Chicago aren't all that friendly, so they probably didn't even notice that I wasn't smiling!! Tom got up early this morning for his physical and then brought back Cinnabon and Diet Coke for me. What a treat! We checked out and then drove to Matt's. We picked him up and made a quick stop at Kohl's, where he used some of his Christmas money. We then went to a pizza place and had Chicago deep dish pizza. One slice was so heavy, I could hardly lift it with just one hand! After we ate, we then dropped Matt off at his place and then drove home. Unfortunately, I got car sick on the way home... forgot to take Dramamine. Have to remember that although I am feeling so good--I still get car sick! All in all, a pretty good trip to Chicago.... after all I got to see Matt! Sorry no pictures. No I didn't forget my camera, just forgot to use it!
